Despite the profound impact that sciatica can cause to your daily life, many people are unaware of what it is, what causes it, and what treatments are available. Sciatica is characterised by pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels into one or both legs. This nerve pain often varies in intensity and frequency, however, there will usually be a component of sharp, jabbing, or “electric shock” pain that radiates into the leg. Sciatica pain is also commonly associated with burning, numbness, and tingling sensations. Muscle weakness is another frequent symptom of sciatica that requires careful monitoring.
During the acute stage of sciatica, many people simply ignore the pain and try to “tough it out” instead of seeking medical advice. Ignoring persistent pain can lead to further nerve damage and cause your condition to turn chronic. Getting early assessment, advice and education is important.

You may also make the mistake of performing exercises that are either inappropriate for your cause of sciatica or done with improper technique. Performing random YouTube exercises may not address the root cause of your problem, therefore it’s important you seek an accurate diagnosis from a qualified clinician before attempting any targeted exercises.
Another consequence of sciatica pain is the over-reliance on pain medications such as anti-inflammatories, opioids or neuropathic medications. Consumed long-term, painkillers can cause adverse side effects including a dependency to stronger medication. Also, it’s important to note that pain medications simply mask symptoms, they don’t fix the problem.
Since there are many disorders that can cause sciatica, we will determine the exact cause of your sciatica. Physiotherapy treatment always begins with a thorough history, spinal, orthopaedic and neurological examination. Special diagnostic imaging investigation (like x-ray, MRI or CT scans) are often not indicated for most cases of sciatica. However, if we felt it was then we would write a letter and refer you on.
As sciatica is due to pressure on the sciatic nerve, it makes sense that treatment involves removing this pressure. Our treatment aims to achieve this by reducing nerve pressure caused by poorly moving spinal joints as well as easing muscular tension in the lower spine, buttock and leg. This is achieved by using a combination of the following techniques:
- Spinal mobilisations
- Massage therapy and trigger point therapy
- Stretching tight muscles, tendons and ligaments
- Advice in relation to how to minimise pressure and irritation on the sciatic nerve
