With summer in full swing and temperatures on the rise, it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated. Whether you’re spending time outside, being more active, or coming in for physiotherapy, making sure you’re drinking enough water is one of the best things you can do for your health.
Water plays a critical role in everything from regulating your body temperature to keeping your joints moving smoothly. It helps transport nutrients, flush out waste, and keeps your muscles working the way they should. Without enough water, these systems can slow down, which may lead to fatigue, cramping, slower healing, and even an increased risk of injury.
Sometimes people don’t realize they’re dehydrated until symptoms appear. Feeling tired, lightheaded, or getting frequent headaches can all be signs. Dry lips or mouth, muscle cramps, and dark yellow urine are also common indicators that your body needs more fluids.
So, how much water should you drink each day? There is the old saying “drink 8 glasses of water a day”, but individual needs can vary depending on your physical makeup and how active you are. During hot weather or physical activity, you’ll likely need to drink a bit more. It helps to start your day with a glass of water, sip regularly throughout the day, and try to drink before, during, and after exercise. Eating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges can also help keep you hydrated.
Hydration might seem like a small thing, but it has a big impact, especially in the summer heat. Making it part of your daily routine can boost your energy, help your body recover more effectively, and keep you feeling your best all season long.
