Massage + Assisted Stretching at Thorpes Physiotherapy

Massage + Assisted stretching is a form of hands-on treatment that involves a series of controlled movements and stretches, targeting specific muscles, performed after soft tissue massage. This service takes a proactive, preventative approach. Rather than waiting for pain or injury to force you into treatment, it focuses on helping your body move well now, so you can stay active for longer.

The combination of soft tissue massage followed by assisted stretching is key. Massage helps to relax and prepare muscles, improving circulation and reducing tension. This creates the ideal conditions for stretching that is more comfortable, more effective and far safer than stretching alone.

Because the stretching is assisted and guided by trained physiotherapists and sports therapists in a clinical setting, you can relax and let your body move without forcing it or worrying about injury. This is not about pushing to extremes; it is about restoring natural, comfortable movement.

What Massage + Assisted Stretching Can Help With

  • Improve posture – aches and tensions from work related postures
  • Reduce pain and tension throughout the body
  • Improve flexibility and movement of muscles and joints
  • Help with recovery post training
  • Improves athletic performance
  • Decreased risk of injury
  • Simply makes you feel better

How Massage + Assisted Stretching Can Make You Feel

Patients often describe the benefits not as one single dramatic change, but as a collection of meaningful improvements that add up to better quality of life:

  • You feel looser and more mobile, especially through commonly tight areas like hips, back, neck and shoulders
  • Everyday movements become easier, from walking and gardening to exercise and work tasks
  • Niggles feel quieter, less intrusive and less likely to flare up
  • You move with more confidence, which helps you stay active rather than avoiding movement
  • Your body feels looked after, not just treated when something goes wrong

Many people also notice mental benefits. Taking time to care for your body, switching off from work and stress, and feeling physically better can have a powerful effect on mood, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your general levels of stiffness and tightness and also what your goals are.  We provide an individualised service, and your therapist will discuss this with you during your first session.

We offer several different package options to suit all needs.

How long are the sessions?

We offer 40 or 55 minute appointments.  Sufficient time needs to be given to the soft tissue massage prior to the assisted stretching.  If you want to target several areas of your body, then we recommend a longer session.

Can I still be receiving Physiotherapy and have this treatment?

You would need to check with your Physiotherapist.

This service is typically used once you have finished your course of Physiotherapy and want to stay injury free and healthy.

Can I use my health insurance for this?

No, Physiotherapy is covered by your private medical, but this services isn’t (like massage therapy)
