Jaw Clicking, Locking, or Pain When You Eat? Specialist TMJ Physiotherapy Is Now Available at Thorpes

If you’ve ever winced while biting into a sandwich, heard an unsettling click when you yawn, or felt your jaw suddenly “stick” mid-conversation, you’ll know how disruptive temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems can be. This small joint, located just in front of your ears, works harder than almost any other joint in the body, and when it goes wrong, it can affect eating, speaking, sleeping, and everyday comfort.

The good news? TMJ dysfunction is often very treatable with the right approach. At Thorpes Physiotherapy, we’re pleased to offer exactly that.

Why TMJ Problems Need a Specialist Approach

TMJ disorders are notoriously misunderstood — not just by patients, but by many healthcare professionals too. The jaw joint is unusual: it’s a small, complex, bilateral joint intimately connected to your neck, posture, bite pattern, and even stress levels. Standard musculoskeletal training doesn’t always cover the specific assessment and treatment skills needed to manage it properly.

This is why many people with TMJ issues bounce between dentists, GPs, and general physiotherapists without a clear, lasting solution. A typical physiotherapy clinic may simply not have the specialist knowledge required to assess the jaw joint, identify contributing factors, and deliver targeted, hands-on treatment.

That’s where we’re changing things at Thorpes.

Meet Ben, Our Clinical Lead — A Specialist Interest in TMJ Care

We’re excited to have Ben, our new clinical lead physiotherapist at Thorpes with a particular specialist interest in treating TMJ dysfunction. He brings advanced, focused expertise in jaw assessment and treatment — something that is genuinely hard to find within general physiotherapy services.

You can read more about his background and experience here.

With this specialist knowledge now part of our team, we’re able to offer a structured, evidence-informed pathway specifically for people struggling with jaw clicking, locking, pain, and eating difficulties.

How We Treat TMJ Dysfunction

Our approach combines hands-on therapy, targeted exercise, and practical lifestyle guidance to address both the joint itself and the surrounding factors that often drive symptoms.

Manual Therapy and Intraoral Release

One of the most effective, and specialised techniques for TMJ dysfunction is intraoral therapy, where gentle, hands-in-mouth techniques are used to release tight internal jaw muscles and mobilise the joint from the inside. This is a skill that requires specific training, and it’s rarely offered outside of specialist clinics.

Soft Tissue Massage

Tension doesn’t just build in the jaw itself. The muscles of the cheeks, temples, neck, and shoulders often become tight and develop painful trigger points as a result of jaw strain. Targeted soft tissue massage helps ease this tension and can significantly reduce discomfort.

Cervical Spine and Postural Correction

The neck and jaw are closely linked. Poor posture, particularly a forward head position, common with desk work and screen use, places additional strain on the jaw joint. Our treatment includes neck mobilisations and postural retraining to address these often-overlooked contributing factors.

Targeted Exercises

Controlled movement drills, such as the “goldfish” exercise and supervised jaw-opening and strengthening routines, help retrain coordination, improve range of motion, and support long-term stability of the joint.

Physical Modalities

Depending on your presentation, we may also use heat or ice therapy, ultrasound, TENS, or acupuncture to help reduce inflammation and calm muscle spasm around the jaw.

Education and Lifestyle Advice

Long-term improvement often comes down to daily habits. We provide practical guidance on:

  • Eating softer foods during flare-ups
  • Managing stress-related clenching
  • Avoiding repetitive strain such as gum chewing
  • Reducing the impact of teeth grinding (bruxism)

This combination of hands-on treatment and education is designed not just to ease symptoms, but to help you understand why they’re happening — and how to prevent them returning.

You Don’t Have to Live With Jaw Pain

Many people assume clicking, locking, or jaw discomfort is just something to put up with. It isn’t. With the right specialist input, most people see meaningful improvement in comfort, function, and confidence when eating, speaking, and going about daily life.
