Reduce Your Risk of Football-Related Injuries This Season

As the summer break comes to an end and pitches around the country fill up again, football season brings with it a familiar surge in injuries. Whether you’re a weekend league player, a parent watching your child return to training, or someone getting back into five-a-side after a few months off, this time of year deserves a bit of extra attention when it comes to protecting your body.

At Thorpes Physiotherapy, we see this pattern every single year — and the good news is that many football injuries are preventable with the right preparation and awareness.

Why Football Injuries Spike at the Start of the Season

It’s rarely bad luck. There are usually clear, physical reasons why injuries become more common as the season kicks off.

Time off over summer. Several months away from regular training means muscles, tendons, and joints simply aren’t used to the same demands. Even naturally fit and active people lose some football-specific conditioning during a break.

Deconditioning. Football requires a unique mix of sprinting, twisting, jumping, and sudden changes of direction. These movement patterns need to be reconditioned gradually — jumping straight back into full-intensity matches without a proper build-up puts unnecessary strain on the body.

The body doesn’t like sudden changes in load. This is one of the most common (and overlooked) causes of injury. If your body has been doing light, low-impact activity over summer and is suddenly asked to perform high-speed sprints and repeated directional changes, tissues can struggle to keep up. This is often when strains, tears, and overuse injuries begin to appear.

Age-related changes. As we get a little older, our muscles, tendons, and joints naturally become less tolerant of rapid increases in load. Recovery also tends to take longer. This doesn’t mean football needs to stop — but it does mean training and recovery strategies may need to adapt.

Common Football Injuries We See at This Time of Year

Some injuries appear time and time again as the season begins:

  • Hamstring strains — often linked to sprinting demands after a period of reduced training
  • Calf strains — common when explosive movements are reintroduced too quickly
  • Ankle sprains — from studs, uneven ground (especially hard ground after a heatwave!), or sudden directional changes
  • Knee ligament injuries — including issues affecting the ACL or MCL, often from twisting or contact
  • Groin strains — frequently seen with kicking, turning, and changes of pace
  • Achilles tendon issues — particularly in players returning after time off, or those in older age groups
  • Lower back stiffness or pain — often related to deconditioning or muscular imbalances

If you’re currently dealing with any of these, or noticing early warning signs like tightness, niggles, or reduced mobility, it’s worth seeking guidance early rather than waiting for things to worsen.

How Thorpes Physiotherapy Supports Football Players Through Recovery

One of the advantages of working with our team is that we have every stage of the recovery journey covered, all in one place.

Specialist knowledge of football injuries. Our physiotherapists and sports therapist have experience working within high-level football environments (including QPR and Reading FC). This means we understand not just the injuries themselves, but the specific demands football places on the body — and how to build a recovery plan that reflects that.

Hands-on physiotherapy assessment and treatment.  We start with a thorough assessment to understand exactly what’s happening, why it happened, and what needs to be addressed — whether that’s muscle tightness, joint mechanics, movement patterns, or previous injury history.

Access to our in-house gym for higher-level rehabilitation. Recovery doesn’t stop at initial treatment. For many football injuries, a structured strength and conditioning programme is essential to rebuild resilience and reduce the risk of re-injury. Our on-site gym allows patients to progress safely through rehab stages, right up to sport-specific loading and performance work.

Advanced treatments to support recovery. Where appropriate, we also use treatments such as:

  • Ultrasound therapy — which can help support the healing process in soft tissue injuries
  • Shockwave therapy — often used for stubborn tendon-related issues, helping to encourage the body’s natural repair process

By combining hands-on physiotherapy, structured rehab, and targeted treatments, we’re able to support players through every phase — from the first days after injury through to a confident return to the pitch.

If you’re dealing with a niggle, an ongoing issue, or want guidance on how to prepare your body for the season ahead, our team is here to help. You can find out more about our services at Thorpes Physiotherapy.

Simple Tips to Reduce Your Risk This Season

While we can’t eliminate every risk, there are steps that make a real difference:

  • Ease back into intensity rather than jumping straight into full matches
  • Prioritise a proper warm-up, including dynamic stretching and light activation exercises
  • Build strength gradually, especially in the hamstrings, calves, and groin
  • Listen to niggles early — small issues are much easier to resolve than established injuries
  • Allow adequate recovery time between sessions, particularly as training intensity increases
  • Consider your age and training history when planning how quickly to increase load

Football is a fantastic way to stay active, social, and fit — and with a sensible, structured approach, most injuries can be reduced or avoided altogether.
