Why Stretching Alone Won’t Fix That Stiffness (And What Actually Will)

Feeling stiffer and achier than you used to? You’re not imagining it — but the solution might surprise you.

If you’re over 45 and notice that getting out of bed takes a little longer than it used to, or that your back groans when you’ve been sitting at your desk for a couple of hours, you’re in very good company. That creeping stiffness and low-level achiness is one of the most common things people in this age group experience — and one of the most common responses is to reach for a quick stretch.

It makes complete sense. Stretching feels instinctively the right thing to do. It’s free, it’s quiet, you can do it in your kitchen whilst the kettle boils, and it often brings a moment of relief. But here’s the honest truth: if stiffness and discomfort are becoming a regular part of your life, stretching alone is unlikely to be the answer. In fact, relying on it too heavily may be why you’re not feeling any better.

So Why Isn’t Stretching Enough?

As we age, our bodies change in ways that go well beyond muscle tightness. Joints lose some of their natural lubrication, soft tissues become less pliable, and — crucially — we tend to lose muscle mass and strength if we’re not actively working to maintain it. This is a normal part of ageing, but it’s also very much something you can do something about.

The problem with stretching is that it only addresses one small piece of a much bigger puzzle. It might temporarily ease a tight hamstring or a stiff hip, but it doesn’t build the strength that protects your joints, it doesn’t correct the underlying movement patterns that may be contributing to your discomfort, and it doesn’t give you the knowledge to understand why your body is behaving the way it is.

Think of it this way: if your car keeps pulling to one side, you can straighten the wheel each time — but unless someone looks at the alignment, the problem will keep coming back.

What Your Body Actually Needs

Addressing age-related stiffness and achiness properly tends to involve three things working together:

1. Education and advice. Understanding what’s happening in your body is genuinely powerful. When a physiotherapist explains why your hip is stiff or why your lower back aches after sitting, it removes a lot of the worry — and helps you make smarter decisions about how you move and live day to day.

2. Hands-on care. Manual therapy from a skilled physiotherapist can make a meaningful difference to how your joints and soft tissues feel and move. This isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about restoring movement quality so your body can function the way it should.

3. Strength and conditioning This is arguably the most important piece for the over-45 age group, and the one most often skipped — usually because it sounds time-consuming or complicated. It doesn’t have to be either. Targeted, appropriate strengthening exercises help protect your joints, improve your posture, support your everyday activities, and reduce the likelihood of pain returning.

Stretching absolutely has a role to play — but it’s a supporting role, not the lead.
