Meet The clinic Founder

Jonathan Smith

Jonathan Smith - MSc, BSc, FSOMM, MCSP HCPC - PH648289

Jonathan Smith is the Clinic Director at Thorpes Physiotherapy. He was born and raised in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and moved down to Hampshire in 2005 where he has lived ever since. Jonathan has been working as a physiotherapist for over 20 years, a dream job that he had ever since he sustained an injury as a child which required physiotherapy.

He was very keen on sports, but he missed out on a lot of activity because of his injury. But what it did introduce him to was physiotherapy – a profession he discovered can make such a difference in people’s lives. For Jonathan, sport was an integral part of his life and he wasn’t able to truly appreciate how important being active was until he held back by an injury, had to go through rehabilitation and then returned to his activities following a lengthy absence. He understood how rewarding and valuable a career as a physio could be and, coupled with his love for science and biology, is something he wanted to pursue.

After becoming a physio, Jonathan went to work in the NHS where he remained for the next 10 years in a role he really enjoyed. He became a clinical specialist at that time but had always held a goal to one day open a practice of his own.

Having worked in other private practices and in the NHS throughout his career, Jonathan believed there was a better way to provide high-quality patient care. He had his own ideas about how he wanted to create an environment that could ultimately transform people’s lives.

Jonathan has been fortunate to be able to have an amazing team over the years who share his vision and values for how physio should be delivered and to deliver world-class service. What makes the job worthwhile for Jonathan is the feedback he receives from his clients, telling him how he and the team have made a huge difference in their lives – that’s ultimately why Jonathan and the team do this job.

Jonathan lectures both Nationally and Internationally on Musculoskeletal Medicine courses to GP’s, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths and was a guest speaker at the Orthopaedic Medicine International low back pain conference in Alingsas, Sweeden in 2023 (see below). He has extensive experience in assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including Injection Therapy.

Jonathan used to work in the NHS as an Extended Scope Physiotherapist, where he specialised in the assessment and treatment of both upper and lower limb conditions. Through this work, he has formed excellent working relationships with some of the best Orthopaedic Consultants in the UK.

Professionally, Jonathan is state registered and is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), the Health Professions Council (HPC), the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine (SOMM) and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Orthopaedic Medicine and Injection Therapy (ACPOMIT). Jonathan is also a full member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).

A keen innovator and passionate about what life has to offer, Jonathan’s optimism will contribute to a more positive outlook of your capabilities.

Jonathan has featured on the radio, where he was invited to talk about Physiotherapy and the journey of Thorpes Physiotherapy. To listen to the interview Click Here.
